The Health Status and Distribution of ABO Blood Group Reflected on Annual Routine Physical Examination for Employees of Several Enterprises in Seoul


Abstract
The data obtained from annual routine physical examination done during the period of 1971¡­1973 for 7,901 employees (male; 6,868, female; 1,033) of several enterprises in Seoul were analyzed in order to review health status and distribution of ABO blood group among these employees. The proportion of employees under 30 years of age was 27.4% for male whereas it was 87.9% for female. An attempt was also made to test association between disease and ABO blood groups. The results are as follows:
1. The most prevalent disease was hypertension which was 43.7% when compared with hemorrhoid (4.95%), color weakness (3.99%), chronic otitis media (2.70%), and active pulmonary tuberculosis (0.59%).
2. The prevalence of all diseases showed gradual increase as age advanced. Males had generally higher prevalence rate than females even for the same age group.
3. The ABO blood group was distributes as following; 31.6% for group A, 27.0% for group B. 30.4% for group O, and 11.0% for AB group. Biochemical race index was 1.12.
4. There was no association between diseases and ABO blood group other than hypertension of young males (under 30 years of age), which showed statistical association with O group although the association was not very strong.
